Study
Wherever and whenever we have lived, human beings have tried to understand our place in the world.
The School of Humanities comprises passionate scholars and teachers who draw on a wide range of approaches to documenting, analysing, and explaining all of our human stories. Our students might study languages and literatures from across the world, develop their understanding of the unfolding histories that still shape us today, delve into the craft of visual and literary communication, explore contemporary media, or grapple with some of the deepest puzzles about the human condition.
Why study a degree in humanities?
Humanities courses foster critical, creative, and ethical thinking about human society and culture, often by engaging closely with the texts and artefacts that record the efforts of others to think through similar issues.
Studying the humanities, you will develop skills in the close and analytical reading of texts and other creative products, from a diverse range of societies and cultures, contemporary and historical. You will also gain an understanding of how the various human stories are placed in their broader context, and learn to probe what is unsaid as well as what is said. You will have the opportunity to contemplate some of the perennial questions that have gripped humanity for centuries, as well as confront new challenges that emerge from the complexities of modern life. You will also be encouraged and supported to contribute your own voice to the great ongoing conversation that is the humanities.
