Asian Studies eligibility criteria

We offer comprehensive language programs integrating all four core language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Our language programs in Chinese and Japanese offer pathways for continuing language students and those learning a second language for the first time. You also have the option to study Indonesian via Flinders University.

Australian award-winning teachers will give you the tools to reach a high level of language competence, while deepening your knowledge and understanding of the society and culture where our languages are spoken. This is key to language proficiency.

    Enrolment Advice to those first year students who are enrolling in Chinese IB or Chinese IIB in Semester 2, by skipping Chinese IA or Chinese IIA respectively in Semester 1.

    If you are pursuing a Chinese Studies Major/Minor or a Diploma in Languages, it is strongly recommended that you enrol in ASIA1104 in Semester 1 in your first year. The ASIA1104 course can be counted towards a Major/Minor in Chinese Studies and a Diploma in Languages (Chinese) for those first year students starting from Chinese IB or Chinese IIB.  However, this is not the case for those who are starting from Chinese IA.   • Indonesian Studies

    Indonesian is taught by Flinders University staff as part of an arrangement between the two universities, and is not taught on the University of Adelaide North Terrace campus. Classes are held at the Flinders University Victoria Square or Bedford Park campus. Refer to the Faculty's hub languages for enrolment and course selection for more details.

    How can I study a language?

    Depending on your degree, you can choose to complete a major or minor sequence in a language, or study language courses as electives (free choice courses). The number of language courses you will be able to study as electives will depend on the structure of your degree.
