Stories from the South book club: Potiki by Patricia Grace

Booklovers are invited to join a new in-person discussion book club featuring a series of brilliant literary works that have emerged from what Adelaide’s resident Nobel Prize winner, J.M. Coetzee, describes as the “unique world” of the South.

This month we read the acclaimed novel Pōtiki  by pioneering Māori writer Patricia Grace, which tells the story of a community on the brink of both ruin and renewal. Set in Aotearoa New Zealand and written during the political upheavals of 1980s, Pōtiki captures in microcosm what became known as the Māori renaissance. Discussion at our in-person meeting will be facilitated by scholar Mandy Treagus.
