To mark the University of Adelaide’s 150th celebration, we invite you to become a part of history and join the Adelaide Law School 150 Club, funding the John Bray Law Scholarship.

Adelaide Law School alum Emeka Cyprian Onwubiko (ESQ) LLB, GDLP received the John Bray Law Scholarship in 2022, calling it a “a life-changing opportunity”

“[The scholarship] provided me with financial assistance that allowed me to focus on my studies without the burden of worrying about how I will afford my education. Also, the support and resources provided through the scholarship program have helped me to excel in my academic pursuits and achieve my goals of completing my law degree."

Emeka has always been passionate about social justice and advocacy.

“From a young age growing up in the Northern part of Nigeria where we were subjected to incessant Islamic terrorists attacks, I was drawn to the idea of helping others and fighting for the rights of those who are marginalised and oppressed.  When I arrived in Australia in 2011, I saw a career in law as an opportunity to make a real difference in the world and bring about positive change.”

“I saw Adelaide Law School as a way to push myself academically and grow as a thinker and problem-solver. Furthermore, I was drawn to the wide range of career opportunities that a law degree can open up. Whether it be working in a law firm, government agency, non-profit organisation, or even in business, a background in law can provide a strong foundation for a diverse range of career paths.”

Emeka experienced ups and downs during his degree, including the disruption of COVID-19 and struggling to build strong relationships. Ultimately, studying at Adelaide Law School was a “transformative experience; from the moment I [set] foot on campus, I knew I was in for a challenging yet rewarding journey.”

“By investing in the education of bright and motivated individuals, donors are not only helping to change the lives of students, but they are also contributing to the future success of our society. The opportunities and support provided by the John Bray Scholarship are truly priceless, and I am grateful every day for the chance to be a part of this program.”Emeka Cyprian Onwubiko (ESQ) LLB, GDLP, Adelaide Law School alum

“The faculty members were not only knowledgeable and experienced in their fields, but they were also dedicated to helping students succeed in their studies and future careers.”

“The quality of education, practical focus of the curriculum, sense of community, and diversity of perspectives all contributed to my growth. I am grateful for the opportunity to study at such a prestigious institution and am confident that the skills and knowledge I acquired will serve me well in my future career.”

Emeka is currently looking for a job in civil law, family law, criminal law, or administrative law.

“Each of these areas of law presents its own unique challenges and opportunities, and I am eager to explore them all.”

In addition to his job search, he also volunteers for a human rights group.

“This experience has given me firsthand exposure to the legal challenges faced by marginalised communities and has reinforced my commitment to using my legal skills to make a positive impact on society. I am dedicated to advocating for justice and equality, and I hope to bring this passion to my future legal career.”

Emeka would like anyone considering donating or sponsoring the John Bray Scholarship to know, “the incredible impact that their support can have on students like me.”

“By investing in the education of bright and motivated individuals, donors are not only helping to change the lives of students, but they are also contributing to the future success of our society. The opportunities and support provided by the John Bray Scholarship are truly priceless, and I am grateful every day for the chance to be a part of this program.”
