Scottish ogre spotted on campus
Everyone’s favourite Scottish ogre will appear on stage when students from the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music deliver their joyous production of Shrek The Musical.
Based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks animation film, Shrek is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure, featuring songs by Jeanine Tesori and a side-splitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire.
Presented by second and first year students from the Elder Conservatorium Music Theatre degree, Shrek The Musical brings all the beloved characters from the film to life to deliver a night of fun perfect for the whole family.
Director Erin James is an Australian actor, director, and teacher, who has performed on stage and film both nationally and internationally. She has returned to Adelaide after working as the Resident Director of The Phantom of the Opera in Sydney and Melbourne.
“Whenever there is work to be done in the areas of social justice, discrimination, human rights and mental health, the underlying messages found within Shrek The Musical will be relevant. At its core, Shrek is about connection and diversity, and it celebrates both of these ideas by challenging stereotypes, parodying established tropes and subverting the norm.”
Like the wildly popular film, Shrek The Musical is the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey.
The musical, which is on for four days this November, features a fantastic cast of beloved characters, including the wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists being rescued. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and Shrek The Musical delivers the perfect kind of mess that calls for a real hero to resolve.
Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek.
Choreographer Joseph Simons has worked with the enthusiastic and talented Elder Conservatorium of Music students to deliver an electric physical embodiment of Shrek and his friends, to delight Adelaide audiences.
“Shrek The Musical is full to the brim with pop culture references, so it’s a lot of fun,” said Mr Simons.
“Choreographically it's been a delight to explore the vast array of physicality that exists in the land of Far Far Away - and with such an eclectic musical score!”
