A group of 19 Elder Conservatorium Music Theatre students will take part in the State Opera South Australia and State Theatre Company South Australia production of Candide, in a work-integrated-learning context.

The student group will be supplementing the 30 members of the State Opera chorus and together will form the Candide on-stage choir.

Working with professionals from State Opera South Australia, State Theatre Company South Australia, and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra on the production will be a wonderful learning opportunity for our students.

Among the 19 students participating are Amy McCann, Sascha Debney-Matiszik, and Brendan Tomlins, who are in their third and final year of the Bachelor of Music Theatre. Their cohort performed in 2023’s Shrek the Musical and 2024’s Little Women, and the remaining shows for this year include Jesus Christ Superstar and Company.

“I am thrilled to be working alongside such an amazing cast and company, gaining insight into the professional industry, and into the lives we have all been training for,” Amy says.

Brendan is grateful for the challenge of Candide’s “magnificent score that is rarely performed” and to gain valuable industry experience while still studying.

Sashca is excited to perform some of Leonard Bernstein’s most beautiful and underrated work.

“I am so thankful for the opportunity to represent the Elder Conservatorium Music Theatre program in my final year and hope to show just how much this program is a force to be reckoned with in the wider industry,” he says.

Candide will be performed from 23 – 25 May at Her Majesty’s Theatre, and among its stellar cast is Adelaide’s favourite cabaret star, the award-winning and internationally loved Hans the German.

Under 30 and full time student tickets are only $35 (excluding fees): buy tickets.
