Elder Conservatorium International Activities: January - March 2025

The Elder Conservatorium has started 2025 with a busy schedule of international visits and visitors.

In January, Dr Elizabeth Layton (Associate Director of Classical Performance) and cello lecturer Edith Salzmann travelled to Thailand for an extensive recital and masterclass tour in collaboration with Silpakorn University, Bangkok.

The tour started with concerts in Chiang Mai and Hua Hin where violist Dr Tasana Nagavajara from Silpakorn University joined the ensemble. A performance of Mozart's Divertimento for string trio in Chiang Mai started things off, followed by an extensive residency at the prestigious Prem International School in a fabulous scenic location in the mountains above Chiang Mai.

This was followed by a performance in Hua Hin and continued to Bangkok for masterclasses for Silpakorn University and a concert series for the

Goethe Institute including pianist Andrey Gugnin. The tour concluded in Pattaya with a final concert including works by Mozart and Schumann. 

In February the Conservatorium hosted a visit by the chamber music group Musikfabrik from Hannover, Germany –  like Adelaide, a member of the group of UNESCO Cities of Music - for workshops and a public concert that included students from the Conservatorium. One of the world’s leading oboists in the field of contemporary music, Peter Veale, is a member of the group and a graduate of the Elder Conservatorium.

Congress of the South East Asian Directors of Music association (SEACOM) in Bangkok, March 6 – 8, hosted by the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, Thailand. This was an ideal opportunity to network with institutions from around the Asian region. New relationships were formed with a variety of institutions from Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and China.

In March, the Conservatorium hosted a visit by Professor Carlo Forlivesi, a professor of composition at the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro, Italy – another UNESCO City of Music. In addition to contributing to classes and seminars, Professor Forlivesi present a solo recital on the organ of the Adelaide Town Hall, including his own compositions and a repertoire extending
from the 17th to the 21st centuries.
