School of Education International Student School Orientation Excursion

In March the School of Education hosted an International Student School Orientation Excursion, offering our international pre-service teachers an opportunity to experience the realities of South Australian schooling ahead of their placements.
The tour began with a warm welcome at Adelaide Botanic High School (ABHS), followed by a rich contextual presentation from school leaders. Small group tours led by practising teachers allowed the 40 participants to observe live classrooms, explore facilities, and witness lesson transitions firsthand.
Later, the group travelled to the Australian Science and Mathematics School (ASMS) for a second immersive tour of an innovative educational institution. Across both schools, students were encouraged to reflect on intercultural dynamics, classroom management, and the professional identity of teachers.

Between the school visits, participants gathered for lunch and a structured learning activity recording insights into classroom environments and teacher-student interactions, setting the stage for critical reflection in follow-up on-campus learning.
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. One student reflected, “Witnessing the student-teacher dynamic and how the environment is arranged was very helpful.” Another noted, “Having a small group tour and observing different teaching styles really deepened my understanding.” Many praised the professionalism of the host teachers and the chance to ask real questions: “Visiting classrooms and speaking with practising teachers was the highlight of the day.”
The excursion not only enhanced students’ intercultural understanding and preparedness for Australian classrooms but also reaffirmed the value of real-world exposure in teacher education. As one student concluded, “It’s a great tour and opportunity to learn!”
