Food Values Researchers in Toronto

Food Values Research Group convener Professor Rachel Ankeny and member Dr Jessica Loyer recently presented papers at Scarborough Fare: Global Foodways and Local Foods in a Transnational City.

Hosted by the University of Toronto Scarborough, this event was the Joint 2016 Annual Meetings and Conference of the Association for the Study of Food and Society; the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society; and the Canadian Association for Food Studies – the first time the three organizations have met together.

Rachel presented a paper co-authored with fellow FVRG member Dr Heather Bray, entitled “‘Stranger Danger!’ Motivations for Buying Locally-Produced Food in Australia,” as part of the panel “Food, Borders, and Xenophobia.”

Jessica presented a paper entitled “Marketing Australia Chia Seed: Functional Nutritionism Meets Nutritional Primitivism,” as part of the panel “Interrogating Nutritionism and Dietary Science in Novel Food Products.”

We were honoured to take part in this stimulating conference at the forefront of Food Studies scholarship.
