The Housewife’s Guide; or an Economical and Domestic Art of Cookery
Researchers have discovered the first locally produced cookbook in Australia.
Dr Jacqueline Newling, a graduate of the University of Adelaide Gastronomy program, Dr Alison Vincent and their colleague Paul Van Reyk have discovered what is thought to be the first cookbook to be locally produced in Australia. The discovery was made from an advertisement for the cookbook The Housewife’s Guide; or an Economical and Domestic Art of Cookery dating back to 1843. It is thought that this may also be the first formally published cookbook with recipes that contain native ingredients.
