School of Education Alumni appointed Principal of one of the world's most influential schools.

Some news about one of our Alumni who happened to be in town today (March 22, 2018):

University of Adelaide and School of Education Alumni, Sam McKinney (Graduate Diploma in Education '93) has been appointed the 19th principal of one of the most prestigious boy's schools in the world, Upper Canada College in Toronto. Sam commenced his appointment on July 1, 2016, which was fittingly Canada Day. He has recently launched  Upper Canada College's (UCC) new Strategic Plan Towards 2029. Upper Canada College (UCC) was founded in 1829 and is one of North America’s foremost boys’ schools. UCC has one of the most generous financial assistance programs among independent schools in Canada, offering over $5 million annually.

Initially, from Canada, Sam travelled to Adelaide to study for his Graduate Diploma in Education. On the first day of his Diploma of Education, Sam met his future wife, Rosey Barr (Graduate Diploma in Education '93), and his time in the School of Education was pivotal in shaping the educator he has aspired to become. Sam later moved to Australia, where he taught for eight years at Hale School in Western Australia. In addition to his teaching duties at Hale School, he was a head of a department, master in charge of rowing, pastoral care leader for Years 8 and 9 and the head of the boarding house. From 2004 to 2006, Sam was a teacher and director of boarding at St. George’s School in Vancouver, before moving back to Australia in 2007 to teach and assume the position of director of the Middle School at Pulteney Grammar School in Adelaide. In 2011, was appointed Deputy Headmaster of St Peter's College - Adelaide.

While at St Peter's College, Sam was instrumental in the development of a Middle Years program and the physical construction of a new Middle School. He oversaw a review of the sports program at St Peter's College and the creation of the position of director of sport and athletic development. Sam was also responsible for the development and introduction of a new and comprehensive outdoor education program.
