School of Education launches inaugural Aboriginal and Islander Education Action Plan

31 May 2019

The School of Education, as part of the National Reconciliation Week, launched our inaugural Indigenous Education Strategy, the School of Education Aboriginal and Islander Education Action Plan (2019-2022).

Believed to be the first of its kind for a School of Education in an Australian university, the strategy sets clear and impactful goals for the next three years that reaffirms the School’s commitment to promote greater understanding of, and respect for, Aboriginal and Islander histories and cultures.

Led by the School’s Indigenous Education lecturer, Michael Colbung, the strategy commits the School to delivering an informative, rewarding and comprehensive learning experience for in the area of Aboriginal and Islander education for both staff and students. It will, over the next three years, see the School foster wider discussions of Indigenous issues from a cross-cultural context in all of its academic programs. It will also see the School embed Indigenous content and perspectives into all initial teacher education (ITE) courses and programs.

We were honoured to have Uncle Rod O’Brien (Kaurna Elder) join us and provide the ‘Welcome to Country’ to open proceedings.  Professor Faye McCallum (Head of School of Education) welcomed invited guests and paid our respects to the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the Kaurna Land. Gguests included, Uncle Rod O’Brien, Professor Ghilad Zuckermann (Linguistics Dept, School of Humanities), Dr Kam Kaur (Wirltu Yarlu), Renee Johnson (Indigenous Support Librarian) and Tammy  Coleman-Zwek (School of Education Alumni).

We would like to thank Indigenous caterers, ‘Block Ya Dot’ for the wonderful Indigenous inspired catering.
