Consumers, community and farm animal welfare

Food Values Research Group graduate researcher Emily Buddle was invited to give a presentation at the Australian White Suffolk Conference in Robe, SA on 11th February 2019.

Her presentation “Consumers, community and farm animal welfare” discussed many of her PhD results including how Australian meat consumers understand farm animal welfare and the role of farm animal welfare activism. Emily focussed her presentation on how food consumption is tied to underlying values and how the actions of citizens and consumers are not the same thing, emphasising the importance of understanding both types of behaviours.

Her presentation was well received, with a number of questions relating to how understandings of farm animal welfare should be discussed within the public space and many of the audience members noting that Emily’s presentation had provided them with a lot to think about.
