On 21 August 2020, we were delighted to welcome Prof Paula Moynihan to talk to FVRG about the relationship between oral health and nutrition. 

During her presentation, Paula discussed the impact of tooth loss on the diet and nutrition levels of older people. She presented evidence which shows a link between compromised oral health and reduced consumption of fruits and vegetables, fibre and macronutrients. Not only does compromised oral health have significant implications for undernutrition but, as Paula argued, it can also negatively impact people's enjoyment of eating. For example, many older people with tooth loss find it difficult to eat the foods they enjoy and may experience discomfort in social situations which involve eating. These issues make it highly important to optimise oral health treatment in order to improve nutrition and quality of life.
