Philosophy of Agricultural Extension

Catherine & Julia

On 24 February 2021, Assoc Prof Catherine Kendig (Michigan State University) and Asst Prof Julia Bursten (University of Kentucky) spoke to the Food Values Research Group about agricultural extension.

Catherine and Julia discussed the practice of agricultural extension within the context of the United States. The practice of agricultural extension involves collaboration between farmers and agricultural extension specialists working together to develop a co-production of agricultural knowledge. Catherine and Julia also discussed the concept of grower standard as it applies to agricultural experimentation. They also emphasised the importance of understanding the broader historical and cultural context which informs agricultural practice.
