I had in my mind a distinct picture of a puppet, suddenly endowed with life, exasperating the patience of the orchestra with diabolical cascades of arpeggios. The orchestra in turn retaliates with menacing trumpet blasts.

This was Stravinsky’s initial vision of Petrushka, which was subsequently shaped by Diaghilev and his Ballet Russes into one of the most popular and enduring ballets of the twentieth century. Pianists Konstantin Shamray and Michael Ierace bring Petrushka to life once again in this fiery version for piano four hands.
