Edith Salzmann, Associate Director of Open Music Academy

Welcome to the Elder Conservatorium's Open Music Academy – South Australia's Premier pre-tertiary music program.

Our programs are designed to be a space for South Australia's talented young musicians to develop, create and connect. Whether you sign up for one of our comprehensive programs, join an ensemble, or take part in our Performance Program, the OMA offers parents and students the flexibility to move at their own pace, guided by the Elder Conservatorium's world-class teachers.

OMA combines a Conservatorium-style education with community spirit. Many of our students pursue careers in music, while others develop a lifelong passion for music. If you aren't sure, please book an informal assessment session.

We are looking forward to seeing you or your child at OMA this year!

  • Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the difference between the academy program and the discovery program?
A: The Academy Program is designed for dedicated musicians who may be considering a career in music or preparing for tertiary study. The Discovery Program offers an introductory experience, ideal for beginners or younger students who are just starting their musical journey.

Q: How do I decide which program is right for me?
A: The first step in the signup process is a meeting with one of our key teachers. During this session, we’ll discuss your goals, experience, and commitment level to recommend the program that best matches your musical background and aspirations.

Q: Do I need to do an audition?
A: Only the Chamber Music Program is auditioned. No audition is required for entry to the other programs. However, we conduct an informal assessment with prospective students to recommend the most suitable program and teacher for their needs.

Q: Do you accept mid-year enrolment?
A: Yes, mid-year enrolment is possible, though availability may vary depending on program and teacher schedules. Contact us to discuss options and find a spot that works for you.

    Q: Are trial sessions available?
A: Yes, trial lessons can be arranged to help you experience our teaching style and environment. Please reach out to us to schedule a trial lesson with one of our instructors.

Q: What’s your policy around missed lessons?
A: Our policies surrounding missed lessons can be viewed here: OMA conditions of enrolment

Q: Do I need to own my own instrument?
A: We recommend that students have access to their own instruments for practice between lessons. If you’re just starting, we can provide assistance here.

Q: Do I get to choose which teachers I’m placed with?
A: While we strive to match students with the best possible teacher for their needs, teacher assignments are based on availability and program suitability. We welcome your input and preferences, which we consider during placement.

    Q: Can I enrol as a mature-aged student?
A: A program for mature-aged students will be released in 2025. Watch this space.
