Elder Music Lab meets Opus Novus – a cross-cultural exploration

Elder Music Lab

This September 2023, the Elder Conservatorium, Adelaide, and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Singapore, reunite for the second instalment of their pioneering, cross-cultural collaborative endeavour. Celebrating the success of their maiden project last year, which saw students from both institutions performing live online simultaneously in two cities, this collaboration is set to evolve further.

This year the two Conservatoriums will form an ensemble composed of students from both schools, giving live performances in Adelaide and then Singapore. The ensemble will perform a varied program showcasing the works of contemporary composers from both Singapore and Australia such as Liza Lim, Yuting Tan, Ross Edwards & Tony Makarome, in addition to a new work by a selected student composer from each school. This provides a dynamic blend of pieces that mirror the rich cultural legacies of both nations. The performance will also feature Grayson Rotumah (Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music) performing on Didjeridu.

This promises to be a unique journey through the diverse soundscapes of Singapore and Australia, highlighting the innovative synergies between these two esteemed institutions.

Elder Hall, Friday 15 September, 7pm. Free concert - bookings not required.
