Musicology Society Australia (SA Chapter) Music Research Day 2024

MSA/SA members and other music scholars in the community are invited to present their work at the MSA/SA Chapter's Research Day, which will be held from 10.00am on Saturday 16 November in the Madley Rehearsal Studio.

20-minute presentations on any music research-related topic are invited. To present your work please provide an abstract of no more than 250 words to Gillian Dooley (gillian.dooley@flinders.edu.au) by Monday 4 November.

If you are a postgraduate student at any SA institution, you may also elect to be considered for the 2024 Naomi Cumming Prize.

2024 Naomi Cumming Prize for Postgraduate Research

Are you a postgraduate student with a music-related research topic, enrolled at any South Australian tertiary institution? If so, consider presenting your work for consideration for the 2024 Naomi Cumming Prize. If your research relates in some way to music, it may draw on any academic discipline/s, e.g., acoustics, anthropology, education, history, linguistics, literature, media studies, musicology, performance studies, or sociology. If relevant, music performance may be incorporated as part of the presentation.

Prize Description – The most outstanding 20-minute presentation of Research by a postgraduate student currently enrolled at any South Australian tertiary institution will be awarded the Naomi Cumming Prize for Postgraduate Music Research ($200) which is sponsored by the Musicological Society of Australia, South Australian Chapter. Three experienced scholars in music research will adjudicate the prize. The Naomi Cumming Prize can be won only once by a student during the time of their postgraduate degree candidature.

Criteria for the Prize are:

  • Innovative research idea and research findings
  • Appropriate and well-argued methodological approach
  • Presentation marked by a very clear and effective structure
  • Material delivered within the specified time frame
  • Effective and confident non-verbal and verbal communication
  • Effective and professional use of audio-visual aids
  • Research and any creative artefacts  are of professional/publishable standard

Prize applicants will give their presentations at the MSA/SA Chapter's Music Research Day, Saturday 16 November, from 10.00am in the Madley Researsal Studio.

Are you a postgraduate student at the Elder Conservatorium? If so, consider presenting your work for consideration for the 2024 Elder Conservatorium Prize for Excellence in Postgraduate Research. If relevant, music performance may be incorporated as part of the presentation.
