The Impact of Oral Health on the Nutritional Wellbeing of Older People.

For the Food Values Research Group's August 2020 seminar, we are pleased to welcome Prof Paula Moynihan.
The aim of Paula's presentation is to explore the evidence base pertaining to the impact of compromised oral health (i.e. loss of teeth) on nutrition in older people considering the potential for dietary intervention in this vulnerable population group. A further aim is to consider the impact of loss of teeth on eating related quality of life and the implications of this for the provision of dietary advice and support. The presentation will consider past and present research pertaining to: the impact of compromised oral health on food choice; the impact of compromised oral health on intake of nutrients and on risk of undernutrition; the impact of compromised oral health on Eating Related Quality of Life and an evidence-based approach to developing dietary intervention for denture wearers.

Paula Moynihan is Director of Food and Health in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She is an internationally renowned researcher in the field of nutrition and oral health (> 130 publications). Her research focuses on the interrelationship between nutrition and oral health across the life-course, including the impact of diet and nutrition on dental caries, sugars and health, and the impact of compromised oral health on nutritional wellbeing. She also researches novel approaches to dietary intervention using co-development methods, and mixed methods evaluation.
