Adelaide Cello Weekend
A huge congratulations to our new cello lecturer Edith Salzmann, who founded and coordinated our first Adelaide Cello Weekend. This wonderful new initiative offered accomplished young cellists the opportunity to participate in ensemble rehearsals and masterclasses over a three-day intensive (Friday 2–Sunday 4 February).
'The long cello weekend started on Wednesday 31 January with the arrival of guest cellists Josephine Vains from Melbourne and Thomas Marlin from Adelaide and nine students from Adelaide, Melbourne and Auckland. Everyone had arrived by midday and we started rehearsals in the afternoon. We played exciting repertoire including Piazzolla's 'Fuga y misterio' and Kaiser-Lindemann's Bossa Nova, both first performances for Australia. Mozart's Overture to The Marriage of Figaro and Jorge Ben's 'Mas que Nada' complemented the twelve-cello part of the program. On Friday, a further seven cellists from Adelaide joined us for masterclasses – Josephine, Tom, Rob Nairne and I had fun listening to 20 cellists. The long weekend finished with a very successful concert in Elder Hall and everyone is looking forward to the next opportunity for the Adelaide cellists to play.'
