Open Music Academy Students Compose with ASO
A group of regional OMA students from years 7–12 were involved in creating a new composition with Julian Ferraretto as part of the Compose with ASO project. The OMA students spent a full day at Grainger studios writing thematic material and orchestrating their music using graphic notation, from which they took away a full score and a recording of their work.
Their piece, 'Between Two Worlds', was based on the experience of being drawn to the colour and excitement of the city from regional centres. It spoke to the stress and overwhelm which can accompany city time and finished with taking a 'feel' for the rhythms of the city and its opportunity for creativity back home to the regions. The students were then involved with a live-streamed ASO rehearsal which incorporated their real-time feedback to the orchestra about their interpretation. The project culminated in the students attending (live and online) the ASO's performance of the student works in The Grainger Studio on Tuesday 28 May.
