String Quartet Weekend 2024

Our first String Quartet weekend (Saturday 27–Sunday 28 April) was a massive success with seven quartets from South Australia and Victoria participating. Ensembles came with prepared repertoire and polished their pieces throughout the weekend with Elder Conservatorium staff Elizabeth Layton, Edith Salzmann, Stephen King, Helen Ayres and Keith Crellin. We had a huge age range, from an 11-year-old violist who had come with her ensemble from Melbourne, to several PhD and MMus students forming a quartet with members based in Adelaide and Victoria, aptly named the Four-States Quartet.

Morning and afternoon teatime with biscuits and fruit gave everyone the chance to meet each other and make new friends. On Sunday, we had the good fortune to meet all the bass players who were in the building for the Bass Day and several quartet members enjoyed attending some of the bass events.

All ensembles presented a part of their repertoire at a performance class in Bishop Hall on Saturday, and finally at our String Quartet Extravaganza concert in the Hartley Concert Room. We hope to present another quartet weekend later in 2024. For further information please contact Edith Salzmann:
