Dr Anna Henwood Receives University Doctoral Medal

It was a delight for the HDR community at the Elder Conservatorium of Music to be informed on Tuesday 4 March that Dr Anna Henwood is the latest recipient of the University of Adelaide Doctoral Research Medal for her outstanding thesis, submitted early (!) and examined late last year. Her thesis is on flautists in Italy of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, reforms to higher educational institutions in Italy (particularly the Santa Cecilia in Rome), and the re-discovery of Italian composers. Key to her research, and the focus of the second part of her conventional doctoral thesis, is the role in Italy of her flute teacher and mentor, Monsieur Raymond Guiot, student of Marcel Moyse, teacher at two Paris Conservatoires, and soloist with the Paris Opera Orchestra.
Anna joins a number of ECM researchers who have been awarded the Doctoral Research Medal. Anna has been teaching the flute at the Open Music Academy for several years, while completing her research which she began in late February 2022. Featured above are photos of Anna with Maestro Guiot in Paris, taken throughout her study trips for her research. Anna also completed an industry partnership project with the Dante Alighieri Society of South Australia throughout her doctoral study, premiering in concert with other musicians works by Santucci, Pelle, Giot, and Deraco. Anna was the first in the history of the ECM to complete a doctoral oral examination, which is a process that has not been widely used for doctoral examinations in Australia. Professor Charles Bodman Rae was Anna's principal supervisor, and Dr Tiziana Torresi was co-supervisor. Anna was the 58th successful PhD graduate of Prof. Charles Bodman Rae, the Sir Thomas Elder Professor of Music at the ECM.
