Stephen Whittington Profiled in FABLE Newsletter

Our Associate Director International and Senior Lecturer in Composition, Stephen Whittington, was recently profiled in the Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics (FABLE) newsletter.

How long have you worked at the Uni?
I started as a part-time tutor in about 1976.

What's your favourite thing about working at the Uni?
I can't think of one thing, so here's a short list: I can walk through parklands to work every day; I have the privilege of spending a lot of time with bright young people and colleagues who are passionate about music (like me); I have an office in the Schulz Building, which means when I am in it I don't have to look at it (cf. Guy de Maupassant and the Eiffel Tower).

Who would be your dream musical collaborator, past or present?
My dream collaborator would be Erik Satie, the eccentric French composer whose music I have loved since I first discovered it as a teenager. However, given his temper, the collaboration would probably end badly; I can imagine Satie hitting me with one of his hundred umbrellas.

3 things you love to do outside of work.
Playing the piano at home – Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Debussy, Satie of course, and a lot more. Cooking – French, Spanish, Italian, Mexican, Japanese. Speaning time with my two grandsons – Harry (5) and Theo (2).
