Jakub Jankowski's 'Nevermore' to Premiere in Chamber Landscapes Weekend in the Adelaide Festival

Jakub Jankowski

It is a great joy to see ECM alumnus Jakub Jankowski (Bachelor of Music with Honours in Composition; Graduate Diploma in Conducting) go from strength to strength as one of Australia's most commissioned young composers. In addition to being Emerging Composer in Association with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (who will perform his new orchestral work in April), Jakub has also been commissioned by the Australian Chamber Orchestra to write a work for their national tour 'Tognetti. Mendelssohn. Bach' tour (5–23 September).

Jakub is also the recipient of the 2024 John Bishop Memorial Commission for the Adelaide Festival, which was first awarded to Peter Sculthorpe in 1968, thanks to a a £5000 gift from The Advertiser to the University of Adelaide, to honour John Bishop's outstanding contribution in establishing the Adelaide Festival in 1960. It has also been won by the likes of Tristram Cary, Elena Kats-Chernin, Ross Edwards, Richard Meale and former Con Director Graeme Koehne, who received it as an emerging composer in 1982.

Over much of its history it has been awarded in consultation with Adelaide Festival and the commissioned works performed as part of the program frequently feature leading members of the Con's faculty. It has not featured in every Festival or been awarded every year, but this partnership was strengthened in 2021 thanks to the collective memory of Adelaide Festival music director, Mary Vallentine AO, and 2021 Chamber Landscapes curator Kim Williams, who has incidentally just been announced as Ita Buttrose's successor as ABC Chair. The Adelaide Festival congratulate Jakub on his incredible achievement and is honoured to support the world premiere of his work.
