On Saturday March 8, the second Open Music Academy Performance Program classes were held for the 2025 year. These are group classes held regularly on Saturday afternoons, accessible through our Academy, Discovery and Performance programs.
Piano Masterclass with Prof Anna Goldsworthy 4:45PM – 6:30PM

Described by The Age as a ‘musical and literary polymath,’ Professor Anna Goldsworthy is Director of the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide, and an award-winning pianist and writer. As a pianist, Anna performs extensively throughout Australia and internationally, as a soloist and collaborator.

Tutor: Edith Salzmann (Cello)
Edith Salzmann is Head of Cello at the Elder Conservatorium. She is a recording artist for the 'Naxos Label ' and has recorded for the Stradivarius label (Milan), EMI Germany and Atoll New Zealand. Edith’s CDs with William Shields complete chamber music are due for release in 2025. In high demand as a teacher, Edith has given masterclasses in Korea, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Italy, Germany, Poland and Switzerland. She has had teaching positions at the Universities of Auckland and Canterbury (NZ) and is the artistic Director of the Pettman National Junior Academy in New Zealand and the International Akaroa Music Festival and performs in recitals as a chamber musician and soloist worldwide.

Tutor: Dr Helen Ayres (Violin)
Helen is a founding member of Seraphim trio, resident leader of the Adelaide Hills Chamber Players Hendrickson Strings ensemble and has appeared as guest leader with numerous Australian ensembles. Helen’s chamber music concerts are regularly broadcast on ABC and MBS-FM radio stations and she has also presented for Radio 5MBS-FM in Adelaide. In 2019, Seraphim’s Thirteen Ways to Look at Birds with Paul Kelly, James Ledger, and Alice Keath won the ARIA award for Best Classical Album. Other albums include Trio Through Time, The Trout, Beethoven Piano Trios and most recently Women in Music. Helen holds a permanent position with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and has since performed in England, Scotland, Germany, Austria and China with the BBC Scottish Symphony and London Philharmonic Orchestra.

The class will learn music theory from the ground up hand in hand aural training. Starting from the basics with literacy and moving towards more advanced concepts like harmony. The class will use elements of Kodaly pedagogy as well as traditional methodology.

Tutor: Stephen King
Stephen King’s extensive career spans a decade as the violist of the Australian String Quartet, following a similar period with the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO). He has participated in countless performances, festivals, recordings and collaborations both in Australia and overseas. Stephen has played as soloist with ACO, Melbourne, Sydney, Tasmania, Vancouver and West Australian Symphony Orchestras and shared the stage with rock musicians from Lou Reed to Powderfinger to Missy Higgins. Currently Stephen is Principal Viola of the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra (ARCO) and collaborates with a diverse group of chamber musicians around the country. Stephen's academic accomplishments include a Doctorate in Chamber Music, with studies under esteemed string ensembles such as the Emerson and Guarneri String Quartets. Stephen shares his musical knowledge through teaching viola and chamber music at the University of Adelaide, Elder Conservatorium, and regularly tutors at National Music Camp, for AYO, AdYO and ARCO's Young Mannheim Symphonists. He regularly sits on adjudication panels and many former students have leading roles in Australian and overseas orchestras and chamber ensembles.

Masterclass – Brass 5:15PM – 6:30PM

Tutor: Dr Emma Gregan, Brass
Emma is Head of brass at the Elder Conservatorium and plays Horn with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Emma has appeared with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Camerata, Opera Australia’s South Pacific, Disney’s The Lion King, and the Welsh Theatre Company for the Tongyeong International Music Festival in South Korea. Alongside her orchestral career, Emma has built a profile as a composer specialising in writing for horn and brass. Her works have been performed across Australia, the USA, Europe, and Japan in recent years, including a prize-winning piece for the Twin Cities Horn Club in Minnesota, USA. She is enthusiastic about building and contributing to education and community programs, and to this effect maintains a private teaching studio and is the Artistic Director of the Adelaide Horn Jam, an active community horn ensemble.
