OMA - Performance Program - March 8

On Saturday March 8, the first Open Music Academy Performance Program classes were held for the 2025 year. These are group classes held regularly on Saturday afternoons, accessible through our Academy, Discovery and Performance programs.

Performance class 1: 4.30PM – 5:30PM
Room 108a
Tutor: Tom Marlin.

Having studied at the Universities of Adelaide, Tasmania and Singapore, Thomas completed his postgraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London, UK).He performed throughout the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Latvia, the Netherlands, Singapore and Australia, and worked with such orchestras as the London Symphony Orchestra and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. This class is for all string players and guitarists. Please bring your instrument and the piece that you are currently working on.

Tutor: John Gluyas.

John Gluyas (M.Mus) is an Australian trombonist and brass educator based in Adelaide. He is a graduate of the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music where he studied with Jorgen van Rijen, the Solo Trombonist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. John held the position of Head of Brass at St. Peters College in Auckland until mid 2022 when his family decided to return to their hometown of Adelaide. He has performed with the Adelaide and New Zealand Symphonies, Orchestra Victoria and the Auckland Philharmonia. John has also performed in Broadway productions of musicals such as Aladdin, Wicked, Mary Poppins and The Book of Mormon. This session will explore the fundamental technique of buzzing and its crucial role in developing sound, control, and tone quality on brass instruments.

Tutor: Stephanie Acraman.

A highly sought after voice and stagecraft teacher, Stephanie Acraman has taught through leading institutions in Australia and New Zealand, developing young artists in preparation for careers in the performing arts in classical, music theatre, jazz and contemporary music genres.

An experienced arts leader, previous roles include Artistic Director for Co-Opera (South Australia) and Senior Lecturer, Head of Voice and Head of Performance Studies at the University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music (NZ) where she developed a leading course in classical and music theatre studies.

In this class we will be looking at storytelling in music, and analysing the text and characters we are singing about, or to. This class is open to all students interested, not only voice students.

This class is open to all pianists , percussionist and students interested in piano

Tutor: Dr Kathryn Moorhead.

Kathryn Moorhead is an Australian flautist based in Adelaide, where she currently teaches flute at the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music, the Open Music Academy, and freelances as an orchestral and chamber musician. Kathryn worked in New Zealand between 2005 and 2022, where she held the position of Associate Principal Flute with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and taught flute at the University of Auckland. She has worked with many orchestras including the Melbourne, Adelaide, Queensland, Tasmanian and Netherlands Symphony Orchestras, the Hong Kong and Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestras, the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra, and Orchestra Victoria. This class is for all wind players.

Workshop 1: 5.45PM - 6.30PM

Tutor: Stephanie Acraman

For the Stagecraft Workship 5.45 - 6.30pm, Mar 8th we will explore how we feel more at ease to communicate with our audience through the music we are playing. We will talk about performance nerves, or lack of and how some techniques can help us connect more to our playing, performance and our audience. This workshop is open to all students

Practice: most effective and efficient practice habits. It will be helpful if the students can make a short journal of what they did in their practice for a couple of days before the workshop and we can discuss the various approaches. This workshop is open to all pianists

This workshop will discuss technical aspects of string playing and touch on performance practice elements. This workshop is open to all string players

Tutor: Kai Gerbi

The class will learn music theory from the ground up hand in hand with aural training.  Starting from the basics with literacy and moving towards more advanced concepts like harmony. The class will use elements of Kodaly pedagogy as well as traditional methodology.
