It was a very special privilege to have legendary pianist Angela Hewitt with us last week. Our piano students Maria Tynan, Jenny Su and Daniel Brideoake played Handel, Schumann and Liszt for Angela in a masterclass on Tuesday 8 October, before the lucky audience was treated to a performance of Bach's first Partita.

Clarinet Mega Day

Our Clarinet Mega Day on Sunday 13 October at the Elder Conservatorium of Music brought together clarinetists of all levels for a day filled with workshops, masterclasses, and performances. Led by Dr Marie Ross, Dean Newcomb, and ECM Head of Woodwind Lloyd Van't Hoff, the day offered valuable insights into technique, equipment, and historically informed performance, culminating in a most exciting final recital with everyone involved.

LA Philharmonic Wind Quintet

Last week, we had the special privilege of hosting five outstanding musicians – Denis Bouriakov (flute), Ricardo Barbosa Pereia (oboe), Boris Allakverdyan (clarinet), Whitney Crockett (bassoon) and decorated ECM alumnus Andrew Bain (horn) – from the LA Philharmonic Wind Quintet for a special residency at the Elder Conservatorium of Music from Tuesday 24–Friday 27 September. They worked with and alongside our students, in rehearsals, masterclasses and individual lessons.

Baroque Academy 2024 a Huge Success

Adelaide Baroque Academy 2024

Adelaide Baroque's fourth annual Baroque Academy, presented in partnership with the Elder Conservatorium of Music, ran from Tuesday 17–Saturday 21 September. The week was a huge success with two evening concerts, lectures, masterclasses, demonstrations and baroque dance classes.

We want to understand the career trajectories and motivations of musicians working in schools and the wider education sector, the skills and innovations they bring to their work, and the impact of their work on their employers and the curriculum. The online survey takes about 20 minutes to complete.

Violinist Elizabeth Layton was soloist and director with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in two sold-out concerts in Adelaide and Gawler, with repertoire ranging from CPE Bach to Peter Maxwell Davies. The performances will be broadcast on ABC Classic on Monday 28 October at 1.00pm.

September 2024 Graduations

It was wonderful to celebrate the achievement of graduates across all of our disciplines at today's graduation ceremony, where Lynn Arnold AO delivered an eloquent speech about the importance of service to the community alongside the self-realisation of the individual. Congratulations to Hannah Beth Yates, admitted to the Degree of Master of Philosophy for a thesis entitled: Group Song Writing and Music Making Opening Social, Education and Career Pathways for Low Socio-Economic Status in Adelaide's North; and to the newly minuted Drs of Philosophy Dr Michael Bevan, and Dr Simón Pazos Quintana, for their theses titled, respectively, Pas De Deux with Seven Strings: Reimagining the Seven-String Guitar in Contemporary Duo Formats and The Sound Beyond the Noise: A Performance-Based Exploration and Contextualisation of the Expressive Content of Aleksandr Mosolov's Piano Works.

ECM Staff Adjudicate Adelaide International Classical Guitar Competition

Four Elder Conservatorium staff members – including Professor Anna Goldsworthy, Associate Professor Carl Crossin OAM, Dr Oliver Fartach-Naini and Dr Anne Cawrse – joined a range of distinguished international guitarists and pedagogues on the adjudication panel for the Adelaide International Classical Guitar Competition Final on Sunday 15 September – the most prestigious guitar competition in the Southern Hemisphere.

Associate Professor Luke Dollman, Dr Dylan Crismani and Grayson Rotumah travelled to Hong Kong last week to collaborate with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, William Barton and Loo Sze-wang.
